SAGOL KANGKJEI :

The sagol kangjei is an indigenous game of Manipur and has originated in Manipur and was adopted as the POLO sports internationally. Each side of the player mounts on the pony horse which is 4-5 feet tall.

Each player had a polo stick to hit the bamboo-made 14-inch circumference ball to the goal. It was in the 19th century the Britishers came to know more about the sagol kangjei and was introduced to worldwide.

This game was initially played on occasion recognizing Laisna as his wife of the pakhangba in 33 AD. Formally, this game has been played since 1606 AD IN THE POLO ground of Kangjeibung. One important question to know is who introduced this game to Calcutta?

Major General Sherar introduced this game from Manipur to India in the year 1863. And in 1869 Polo game was introduced in the England by the Tenth Hussar. However in 1871, the first match between Ninth Lance and tenth hussar played in Hounslow.

Khong Kangjei

Do you know the khong kangjei is a very popular game of Manipur and is also known as Manipuri Hockey? The number of players required to play this game is seven and the sports equipment used are the bamboo stick of 4 feet long bent at the lower tip similar to the hockey stick of the present day.

The bamboo root ball is used as a ball in the field of 200 x 80 yards. No goal posts were there. So to score a goal it must cross the goal line.

To play this game, it require physical stamina, speed, agility, etc.

YUBI LAKPI OR THE MANIPURI RUGBY

This is a very interesting game where Yubi the coconut is snatched by two team members. It was mostly played at the Bijoy Govinda Temple ground. No f players require 7 on each side and the field size is 45x 18 metres.

KANG

Kang IS the most popular game of Manipur played till now and was first introduced by King Loitongba. Played on the polished earthen floor of a big outhouse. Team member on each side has 7 members. During the meitei cheiraoba this game is played in mixed double style and during times of Rath yatra, these are played.

Hiyang tannaba or the Boat race

The Hiyang tannaba or the boat race is played every year int the month of November in the thangapat. The boats called as the hiyang hirel was considered to acquire spiritual powers. In the year 1635, a boat race between the king and Shri Bishnu was introduced followed by the Panna race.

THANG TA SARIT SARAAT

Thang ta sarit sarat are the forms of Manipuri martial arts that have been played since ancient times This game is energy consuming and skill-demanding art of fighting.
